SENIOR HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION RESEARCHER

POSITION OVERVIEW
We currently have an opening for a full-time Senior Human-Computer Interaction Researcher with expertise in human language technology. We are especially interested in researchers whose work incorporates recent advances in generative large language models (LLMs). Specific research areas of interest include human-machine dialogue, human-AI alignment, trust (and over-trust) in AI, and the use of multimodal generative AI approaches in conjunction with other tools and techniques (e.g., virtual and/or augmented reality) to accelerate learning in real-world task environments. Additional related projects underway at Kairos involve the integration of generative AI into interactive dashboards for visualizing and interrogating social media narratives. The Human-Computer Interaction Researcher will play a significant role in supporting our growing body of work with DARPA, Special Operations Command, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and other federal sponsors.

REQUIREMENTS

  • US citizenship or green card.
  • Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Linguistics, or related discipline.
  • 3+ years direct research experience post-Ph.D.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain independent research funding.
  • Strong publication record as lead author or senior author in high-impact journals/conferences.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.

OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience with 1) deep learning, as well as common associated frameworks (e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow) and 2) NLP, employing established toolsets (e.g. spaCy, nltk, gensim).
  • Familiarity with common tools, frameworks, and services for building, testing, and evaluating generative AI, especially LLMs (e.g., HuggingFace, LangChain, OpenAI).
  • Experience utilizing contemporary LLM frameworks for learning and inference, including supervised fine-tuning LLMs, as well as transformer reinforcement learning (e.g., reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), direct preference optimization (DPO)).
  • Expertise in evaluating AI alignment/misalignment, diagnosing possible sources of bias, and deploying strategies to address or mitigate poor alignment.

SOFTWARE ENGINEER / FRONTEND DEVELOPER

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are in search of a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer with a strong emphasis on Frontend Development, demonstrating special expertise in designing and developing frontend data visualizations and interactive dashboards. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for communicating and storytelling with data for both lay and expert audiences. It is essential that the candidate interface smoothly with researchers, data scientists and analysts, and other team members to develop compelling, interactive displays of complex data and models. To this end, the candidate must be fluent in JavaScript, frontend frameworks React, Vue.js, and Bootstrap, as well as visualization frameworks such as D3.js and Apache ECharts. Backend skills are also highly desirable, including developing RESTful APIs using Python frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask and Javascript frameworks such as Node.js. Experience in SQL databases and NoSQL databases like MongoDB is very valuable. Knowledge of probability and statistics is expected, insofar as it is essential to creating data-driven visualizations and summarizing models executed by researchers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop front-end visualizations and interactive dashboards, bringing data to life for users and communicating central insights to lay and expert audiences.
  • Create compelling data visualizations using frameworks like D3.js and Apache ECharts.
  • Design and implement responsive, user-friendly frontend components using React, Vue.js, Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS, and other relevant frameworks.
  • Utilize NoSQL databases, particularly MongoDB, for efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • Employ version control systems, specifically Git/GitHub, to manage code repositories.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of software components.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • US citizenship or Permanent Resident (green card) status.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript and experience with frontend frameworks like React, Vue.js, Bootstrap, etc.

  • Familiarity with visualization frameworks such as D3.js and Apache ECharts.
  • Strong UI/UX design skills, emphasizing a user-centric approach.

SENIOR COGNITIVE RESEARCH SCIENTIST

POSITION OVERVIEW
We currently have an opening for a full-time Senior Cognitive Research Scientist to help grow our expanding portfolio of government-sponsored research in the human sciences. The Senior Cognitive Research Scientist will play a major role in supporting our human performance data modeling and data analytics efforts with the Air Force Research Laboratory, as well as other projects involving a wide variety of physiological, cognitive, and behavioral data types (ranging from wearable sensor data to cognitive and behavioral performance data).

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Is a natural leader who enjoys taking charge of a project and/or team.
  • Has a track record writing winning research proposals and building his/her own portfolio of externally funded research.
  • Has excellent communication skills and enjoys engaging directly with government clients and colleagues.
  • Is highly creative and capable of identifying novel research questions and/or conceiving of novel solutions to challenging technical problems.
  • Is comfortable working on high-tempo contract research projects with defined milestones and concrete deliverables.
  • Has a deep understanding of leading-edge techniques in data science and statistical modeling in the context of human performance data analysis, including analyses at both the individual and group (i.e., team) level.
  • Has experience analyzing eye movement and pupillometric data, especially in relation to cognitive state, workload, and/or decision-making.
  • Has prior experience working on projects funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) and/or related to national security.
