Kairos Research Principal Research Scientist Dr. Amy Summerville was a featured speaker at a recent event co-organized by the Uniformed Services University (USU) and Duke University. Titled, “Hospital 2.0 Summit: Creating the Digital Twin,” the event brought together military and civilian leaders from healthcare and tech to discuss the potential for AI-enabled digital models to improve the quality and efficiency of medical care. Dr. Summerville’s talk, “Incorporating Human Values in Off-the-Loop Tools,” highlighted the Kairos team’s work on DARPA’s In The Moment (ITM) program. ITM has investigated how to improve high-stakes decision-making in far forward expeditionary medicine or mass casualty incidents by creating AI decision-support tools with high fidelity to the preferences and priorities of human experts. Dr. Summerville highlighted the attributes and measurement approaches developed by Kairos in their role as an ITM performer since 2023, and the importance of understanding human priorities as a first step to defining what makes a “good decision” in high-stakes environments.
